Public Notice
Verner Water Discolouration

August 1, 2019

Verner residents have been experiencing discolouration in the municipal water supply due to higher levels of manganese in the Veuve River. Manganese is a naturally occurring mineral that is found in the environment from natural sources and is distributed in air, water, and soil. Despite the unappealing colour, at times accompanied by an undesired taste and smell, the water is bacteriologically safe.

Due to the reoccurring fluctuations in the Veuve River, the manganese levels are high this year and proving difficult to treat. We recognize that water discolouration has been an ongoing issue and that it has caused concerns amongst residents, understandably so. The Municipality is looking at taking long-term measures to rectify the situation permanently. We are working with the Ontario Clean Water Agency to adjust our current treatment measures, while in compliance with provincial regulations. Although Manganese is unappealing, it is an aesthetic concern, we must continue to ensure the safe treatment and distribution of water to our residents.

With these adjustments in the treatment, we are hopeful that the discolouration in the water will improve by the weekend. In the meantime, the Municipality will be providing bottled water to those affected by the Municipal Water System. Bottled water will be available at the Verner Fire Hall at 13 Principal Street, W, from 1 pm to 8 pm today (August 1st). An update will be provided in regards to pick up hours for tomorrow (Friday, August 2), subject to water availability.

We will update residents as new information becomes available, or the status of the water supply changes. We appreciate your patience as we work on finding a permanent solution.
